Crime Prevention through Environmental Design Lecture

This lecture is an introduction to Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) and will familiarize you with the concepts, principles and practices of CPTED. The lecture will explore situational crime prevention as a primary preventative measure, directed at stopping crime problems before they occur. The focus will be on reducing opportunities for potential offenders through attention to the design of physical spaces. Two criminological theories underpin this methodology; Routine Activity Theory and Rational Choice Theory.
This lecture will be of particular interest to front-line police officers, architects, planners, developers, academics and volunteers working in the field of or who have a special interest in crime reduction, crime prevention, and community planning and problem-solving. It is organized into three modules and designed to take candidates three hours to complete. Perusing the supplemental information and completing all practical exercises may add additional time.
