Deviant Place Theory Lecture
The topic to be outlined is Deviant Place Theory, one of four concept developed from Victimology studies, an aspect of Criminology that emphasizes on the victim rather than the offender. This perspective looks at the environment where persons reside, usually high in crime, which make them more susceptible to becoming victims. The characteristics of the Deviant Place, and the type of persons who reside in these places would be explored. Also, the work of Edwin Sutherland (1883-1950), and Robert K. Merton (1968) would be used to make inferences on earlier works on deviance and crime. In addition, current works and theories such as Social Ecology Theory by Park and Burgess (1925), and Social Disorganisation Theory by Shaw and Mc Kay (1942) would be examined. The presentation further explore statistics and serious crimes from a regional and local perspective.
