International Human Rights Day -Rights and Responsibilities of Individuals in Need of International Protection - 10 December 2020

The Caribbean Region remains an origin, transit route (stepping-stone) and destination for mixed movement that includes movement of people to include persons in need of international protection, trafficking or smuggling of people, migrants including illegal migrants. COVID 19 has closed borders globally, which consists of the Caribbean Region and some countries have reopened or partially reopened their borders to some nationals of some countries. Migrants are faced with stigma since public opinion states that they are bringing the virus to the country. Several human rights concerns must be taken into account when differentiating between individuals coming to the Caribbean  to include smuggled and/or trafficked migrants, asylum seekers or refugees, stateless persons and other vulnerable migrants.
